Former National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) chairman John Mututho has cited corruption and drug abuse as the major challenges facing Kenyans.
Mututho lauded the government for the measures put in place to curb the two vices but noted there is more that needs to be done.
Mututho, who runs the Jomec Rehabilitation Centre in Mwariki, in the outskirts of Nakuru town, said the only way to deal with drug and substance abuse is by the government investing in rehabs.
On matters corruption, the former NACADA boss proposed that government comes up with a policy that will see the deaf trained and absorbed in procurement offices.
According to the former Naivasha legislator, countries like Israel have been able to address insecurity by applying the same.
He argued that if the government can come up with such a policy, then the deaf will be trained and given the opportunity to serve in procurement offices and help in curbing graft as they cannot be compromised.
“If we can come up with a policy where we allow the deaf and dumb to be trained and absorbed in procurement offices where corruption is rampant because these people cannot be easily compromised by the cartels,” said Mututho.
Mututho was speaking on Sunday at Ngala School for the deaf in Nakuru Town during a sensitisation forum on drug abuse and its effects on society.
He commended the media for trying to cater to the deaf and dumb through the provision of interpreters.
“I thank the media for you have embraced the deaf and dumb by having that provision for interpreters on the screens,” he said.
