22-year-old Josephine Nafula was allegedly planning to steal an newborn at the Lugulu Mission Hospital on Tuesday after faking labour pains the previous night.

The hospital administrator Jackson Fukwo said that the accused, who is married to a Kenyan, was transfered to the maternity wing after being referred to the hospital.

However, he added, checks showed that she was not pregnant, with further investigations showing that she had wrapped rags in her tummy to look pregnant.

“When we keenly looked at her we found that she had wrapped rags in her tummy, we then did a pregnancy test on her and discovered that she wasn’t pregnant,” he is quoted by the Citizen Digital.

Fukwo adds that the accused also lacked proof that she had been attending clinic as should be the case, before finally admitting that she was faking the pregnancy.

"We examined her by checking her pressure and conducting a few tests but we did not find her with the antenatal clinic cards that we usually look at to a certain whether she has been attending clinic," he added.

Mr Fukwo added that the accused said that she has had four miscarriages, the latest one being only recently, and was afraid that her husband would divorce her if he discovered.

Her arrest was confirmed by Bungoma East OCPD Valerian Obote after police from Webuye Police Station arrived and took her to the station.

The hospital adminstration suspects that she was suspecting to steal one of the twins given birth to by another woman on the same night.
