Police in Siaya county have launched a manhunt for a capital offender who escaped from the Siaya GK Prison on Sunday morning.
The inmate was among three prisoners who managed to break out before the two were rearrested and returned to the correctional facility.
Kenya Prisons Service Dixon Mwakazi confirmed the prison break, saying that the trio saw its opportunity and struck while others were attending a church service.
He said that the two who were rearrested will be arraigned in court to face fresh charges of escaping from prison, adding that the three were all capital offenders.
"Our officers made frantic efforts to arrest the two who will be arraigned on Monday to face charges of escaping from lawful custody," he told the Nation.
He added that a search has been launched for the one who remains at large, though he could not confirm the exact crimes the three were serving a jail term for committing.
"I have just received information about the prisons break that happened on Sunday morning during prayers. I don't have details about their offences yet," added Mr Mwakazi.
People living around the correctional facility reported hearing gunshots at the same time.
