Hon Suleiman Shabal, the former Mombasa gubernatorial candidate, has regretted the recent Likoni Ferry Tragedy where he took his frustration on social media.
"Its very sad to watch people die when their car drove off the ferry and people could only watch helplessly as they drowned. This now raises new concerns on safety on the ferry all over again."
He further complained of the way passengers and cars compete for space while boarding and disembarking from the ferry, calling it a 'tragedy waiting to happen.
"I watch thousands of people disembarking from the ferry while competing with cars and heavy trucks driving off the ferry as they struggle to climb the hill. It's a tragedy waiting to happen EVERY SINGLE DAY. Common sense says that no vehicle should be allowed to move till all passengers have safely left the ferry before they start moving.
Yet we will wait till a bus runs over some people then we start pontificating about how the ferry has failed. I hope our ferry directors are taking note. If such an accident were to occur we should not just say it's an accident we should call it what is it- criminal negligence." he posted
According to reports, a saloon car (Probox) on Sunday plunged into the Indian Ocean at the busy Likoni channel in Mombasa. Police say the white car, which was among the last ones to get into Mv Harambee from the mainland slid back into the deep waters.
Kenya Ferry Service (KFS) in a Facebook post said the cause of the accident is still under investigations as search and rescue efforts are under way.
“Neither the car nor the occupants have been retrieved. We share our sincere sympathies to the affected as the salvage operations continue," posted KFS on its official Facebook page.
