Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot has been dealt a major blow after the Murang'a County Assembly unanimously rejects Punguza Mizigo bill.
The bill seeks to retain all 47 counties and 1,450 wards, which will serve as primary units of accelerating development.
The Former Presidential candidate wants the number of women reduced and the Presidential term limit lowered to one of seven years.
The bill has only received the support of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly since he was given the green light to meet the MCAs over the same.
Aukot has, however, remained optimistic that he will get the support of the at least 24 counties to push the proposals to the next stage.
The new development comes barely a week after Aukot accused Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Amolo Odinga and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru of frustrating his party in the push for a referundum.
Aukot said that the two leaders have proven beyond doubt that they are ready to do anything to ensure that the proposals do not see the light at the end of the day.
“As the debate on the Punguza Mizigo Bill gains its own momentum, especially with growing support from the public and the county assemblies, it is very unfortunate that it has also been hijacked by a group of the political class who have told blatant lies about the bill,” said Aukot during a press conference in Nairobi.
