A day after President Uhuru Kenyatta cancelled his much-anticipated tour to Mt Kenya, Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata has blamed the local leadership.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was set to visit Kenol for a church service at ACK but pulled out at the last minute in what is believed to have been engineered by local politics.
Deputy President William Ruto had also scheduled to visit Kandara in Murang'a, but also cancelled the mission to pave way for President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, Senator Kang'ata says the divided local leaders did not share about details of expected visits of both Uhuru and Ruto thus the last-minute confusion.
Kang'ata, who spoke in a local TV interview on Monday, said Uhuru was first to organize the trip to the region on May this year.
“The bishop was among those who had accompanied me and we had a chat with the President and this is when we invited him for the service,” he said.
He further said despite having that agreement, they had not been given official communication to confirm the President’s visit.
“His coming was confirmed on Thursday but unfortunately this also changed the last minute,” said the senator.
Uhuru sent Cabinet secretaries Dr Fred Matiang'i, James Macharia and Joe Mucheru to represent him. Matiang'i said Uhuru will return at a later date.
The cancellation of Sunday's meeting has yet exposed cracks within Jubilee, a further manifestation that Uhuru and Ruto no longer speak from the same script.
