A British national was charged in a Mombasa Court with failure to pay tax to the Kenya Revenue Authority.
Aaron John Kitchener, a director at a security firm, was being accused of allegedly failing to pay tax amounting to over Sh39 million.
Kitchener was being charged alongside other British directors and Kenyan directors who did not appear in court.
Kitchener was being accused that on diverse dates between January 1, 2018, and July 20, 2019 he failed to pay Sh5,578,181 Value Added Tax.
While being a director of Xfor Security Solutions, the court heard that the accused also on diverse dates between January 1, 2015, and December 2018, failed to declare Sh24,636 778 being Pay As You Earn tax which were from salaries paid to management staff.
Standardmedia reports that Kitchener was further accused that in 2018 he allegedly made incorrect statement to the commissioner of domestic taxes amounting to 2.4 million for salaries.
The accused person however denied the charges before the court and filed an application to be released on bond pending the next case hearing.
Kenya Revenue Authority lawyer Moses Ado did not oppose the application but asked the court to order the accused to surrender his passport.
Mombasa Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti directed that he be released on a Sh3 million bond with a similar surety.
Magistrate Nyaloti ordered that the accused person should deposit his passport with the police.
The accused person will appear in court on August 23 for a pre-trial conference.
The other directors who failed to appear in court were summoned to appear in court on August 23 to plead to tax evasion charges.
