Footballers around the world are known for giving back to the community through various projects, among them health, education, and nurturing of upcoming sporting talents.
Kenya national soccer team; Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has now joined a clique of footballers giving back to the society through an ambitious plan to set up a sporting academy.
The academy will be set up on a 20 hectare piece of land in Busia County, and will cost hundreds of millions of shillings.
“It will cost hundreds of millions, let us say Sh200 million but we still don’t have the exact amount of money in place,” said a volunteer at the Victor Wanyama foundation, who only introduced himself as Gabriel.
In a phone interview on Friday morning, Gabriel said Wanyama chose to put up the foundation in his native Busia because the place is closer to his heart.
He said plans are already in place to ensure the academy is up and running as soon as possible.
“The land is already acquired. After we acquired the land of course we drew out the plan. Most of the plans are already in place. After the plan then the construction bit of it. Probably the next one year it will be up and running,” said Gabriel.
Wanyama plays for English side Tottenham Hotspur. The academy will have both outdoor and indoor sporting activities.
