Under the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Unions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (Kudheiha), they have been demanding additional privileges from the Salaries and Remuneration a Commission (SRC).

Among their demands is an increase in housing allowance, which has seen them settle on an additional Sh14 billion from the SRC.

However, after a crisis meeting on Tuesday, they have now agreed to take the Sh8.8 billion offered by the SRC, which will also include salary hikes, set to begin being paid next month.

“We want our staff to enjoy the benefits of the 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement immediately,” the University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Isaac Mbeche, who was the main negotiator stated on Friday.

He says staff can now get an additional Sh27,000 in their salaries.

The highest-paid professor will now pocket Sh274,540, up from the current Sh248,898. The highest-paid senior lecturer will earn Sh194,852 from the initial Sh157,720.

Graduate assistants currently earning between Sh46,978 and Sh66,978 will earn Sh61,489 and Sh78,659 after the implementation.

The additional monies will be paid to the unions.
