Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut now wants the government to reduce the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) monthly contributions from Sh500 to Sh300.
Speaking to journalists in Eldoret town on Monday, Chepkut said the amount is very high, adding that the common citizen can not afford it.
“I'm calling upon the national government to reduce the NHIF monthly contribution with immediate effect so that many people can benefit. How do you expect mama mboga or a jobless person to pay Sh500,” said the MP.
He reiterated that the majority of Kenyans cannot access quality health care due to the high cost of the services despite it being a basic human right as enshrined in the 2010 constitution.
“After all as according to the constitution we belong to the government and the government is ours and for the government to achieve the Universal Health Care (UHC) the prices must be reduced,” added the first-time lawmaker.
He further called on the government to ensure that NHIF fully covers terminal diseases such as cancer, arguing that most lives are being lost because the patients cannot cater to their very high medical bills.
Chepkut at the same time urged Kenyans to register with NHIF for them to get quality health care at an affordable price.
