President Uhuru Kenyatta accompanied his Tanzanian counterpart Pombe Magufuli to a hospital on Saturday to see his host's mother.

In a video shared online, the Kenyan president is seen talking with Magufuli's mother, who is bed-ridden, as she weakly mumbles in response.

The Tanzanian president tries to explain to his mother that the person beside him is President Uhuru.

"This is Uhuru, the president of Kenya. (Huyu ni Uhuru, Rais was Kenya), " Magufuli tells his mother.

Uhuru then makes the sign of the cross and starts praying for the sick mother.

In his prayer, the Kenyan president called on God to intervene and heal his Tanzanian counterpart's mother.

Uhuru arrived in Chato, Gheita on Friday morning for a personal visit that has been widely seen by pundits as an attempt to placate the Magufuli administration over xenophobic comments uttered by Starehe MP Charles Njagua.

The two leaders, in their speeches, emphasised the need for greater unity and cohesion as they railed against politicians keen on engaging in divisive politics.

Diplomatic tensions between Kenya and Tanzania were ignited by Jaguar's tirade with the Kenyan government moving quickly to prevent an all-out diplomatic fall-out.
