The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has dismissed claims that his office is yet to make convictions owing to weak cases.
In an interview with Spice FM on Wednesday, Haji noted that corruption cases are complex, and need time to investigate and secure convictions.
He said systemic problems are to blame for the slow progress of corruption cases in the country.
“How do you conclude that they are weak when we have not even sat down and heard them,” he said as quoted by Standard.
“I have been arguing that we need to be given a level playing field. We do not need to put our head in the sand yet we all know that they are systemic problems that transcend the Executive, Judiciary, Parliament and even the media," he added.
Regarding an order barring state officers charged with corruption from accessing office, Haji noted that he supports the move, arguing that previously, suspects remained in office and interfered with evidence.
“One of the reasons that we are asking governors and other officeholders to step aside is because continuously the experience has been that if they stay in office, they interfere with investigations and evidence,” he said.
