The first Coronavirus death outside the People's Republic of China has been reported in the Philippines, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

The death was confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in a statement.

"This is the first known death of someone with 2019-nCoV outside of China,” the World Health Organization’s office in the Philippines said, as quoted by the New York Times.

The man whose name has not yet been made public is 44 years old and is said to have suffered from severe pneumonia, resulting to his death.

He is said to have stayed in Wuhan, the worst hit area.

The grim development comes as countries across the world are on high alert over the novel deadly diseased which is said to have led to the deaths of around 360 people.

15,000 people are said to have been infected.

It was first reported in Wuhan city in China.

The Chinese government has introduced extraordinary measures to deal with it including banning people from moving and cancelling New Year celebrations.

Kenya is among the countries that have taken measures to prevent Coronavirus spread including suspending flights and screening passengers arriving from China.

So far, suspected cases in Kenya have turned out to be negative.
