Through its Director General Zachary Mwangi, the bureau released data indicating he Kenyan population currently stands at over 47.6 million people.

Speaking on Tuesday, Buyu said she believes in the numbers, suggesting that the credibility portrayed in the exercise outweighs the questions she has about the released data.

She also took a swipe at fellow politicians who have given varying views about the results, saying majority are only doing it for political gains and not welfare of the people.

"I have questions but I believe in the census numbers. Leaders seem to be interested in the numbers only for political gains," she said on Citizen TV's Daybreak show.

She added that while the exercise was not entirely biometric as should have been the case, it has corrected the wrongs that were witnessed in the 2009 one.

"We did not go biometric but the effort put on the census was aimed at correcting previous wrongs," added the parliamentarian.

Buyu's county topped Luo Nyanza with 1,115,574 people, closely followed by Homa Bay  county with 1,131,950 and Migori county third with a population of 1,116,436 people.

Siaya is the least populated with a population of 993, 183.
