A couple from Slaughter Estate in Kitui Township was on Wednesday rescued from a burning house, allegedly set ablaze by one of them.
Kitui Central OCPD Musa Abduba confirmed the incident and revealed that the couple had initially separated. The man, however, made an impromptu visit to where the lady was residing.
It is not yet clear as to how the fire started, but Mr Abduba pointed out that there was a conflict between the two lovers before the fire erupted.
Julius Mutinda, an eye witness, claimed that the fire which started from the couple's house was huge making it hard for them to extinguish it. They consequently alerted the Kenya Red Cross who arrived in time to save the two lovers.
“We were startled by a huge fire coming from their house. We immediately raised alarm and called for help from Red Cross who responded swiftly. However by the time they arrived, the two had been burnt severely,” Mr Mutinda said.
Mutinda further called upon the county government to renovate the poor roads in the estate so as to make it easily accessible to facilitate rescue missions.
The two are undergoing treatment at the Kitui County Referral Hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the inferno.
