Amani National Congress (ANC) Leader Musalia Mudavadi has said that he doesn’t support the idea of hiring public servants on a contract basis.
While responding to questions from the public, Mudavadi said that the move will affect the labour market in a negative way, adding that it is not healthy for the Kenyan economy.
He said that employment is a service that the government needs to provide for its people and hence contracts will demean the general population in different ways.
“Indeed, employment in public service is also a service being provided by the government to its people. Therefore, a certain cadre of civil servants must of necessity work under permanent and pensionable (P&P) terms to ensure continuity and stability in service, "he said in part, as quoted by Daily Nation.
Mudavadi, who is considered as one of the front runners in the race for Presidency in 2022, also said that the government cannot afford to have employees who are happy at work.
He noted that the contracts are likely to demotivate some of the public servants because they are aware that their tenure is short-lived in the office.
He added that the government needs to adopt other ways of ensuring better service delivery rather than contracts.
“A country can never afford a demoralised public service. Contracts will mean a very heavy turnover every other three years, yet we would not have created employment opportunities outside government, a three-year looting binge will occur,” he added.
