The Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has taken issue with the release of a man earlier accused of gouging out a woman's eye in Mombasa.
The man, 28-year-old Victor Odhiambo Omanya was accused of causing bodily harm to Stella Mwende, 43, after she turned down his advances in December 2018.
However, after the suspect was charged in a Mombasa court, he was eventually set free after police failed to present his case file to the court, which left the prosecution with no other choice but to withdraw the charges.
Source indicates DPP Haji has mounted pressure on the DCI in Mombasa which has forced them to launch a new search for the suspect who is said to have fled to Nyanza region which is his village.
"The DCI officer in charge of Mombasa is the one who is facing the wrath of the DPP. He has been under pressure and has since started a new search for the suspect," a highly-placed source revealed to Nation
The suspect had fled from Mombasa to Nairobi after committing the crime. However, when the DPP and DCI boss George Kinoti visited Kisauni, they were moved by Mwende's heartbreaking story and promised to take action.
They moved fast and within weeks, the suspect was nabbed from his hideout but the case was thrown out.
