Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago on Sunday reiterated his commitment to supporting sportsmen and women in the country.
In his Mashujaa Day speech read by his deputy Daniel Chemno, Mandago said his administration has set aside Sh300 million for renovation of the dilapidated 64 stadium and nine other stadia in the county.
"Through the department of sports, the county intends to construct 64 stadium this financial year for Sh250 million, and also nine other sub-county play fields at a cost of Sh27 million," the governor said.
Mandago said the county decided to renovate the stadia to create a conducive environment for athletes to train.
In his speech, he congratulated various athletes who have made Kenya proud in the global arena.
"We also celebrate Eliud Kipchoge, Brigid Kosgei the women marathon record holder, David Rudisha the 800 metres record holder, half marathon men record holder Geoffrey Kamworor, half marathon women record holder Joslyn Kosgei, 3000 metres steeplechase women world champion Beatrice Chepkoech and 3000 meters men record holder Daniel Komen among many," he said.
Chemno challenged the national government to work on ensuring stalled construction works at Kipchoge Keino stadium resume and are completed as soon as possible.
