A man in January 2003 shocked the nation when he claimed to have walked into the Nairobi Statehouse to talk then President Daniel Moi to hand over power.
Mr David Onyango was arrested early the next morning sleeping on a carpet, but not after going through files and washing his clothes in a bathroom sink.
In an interview with the Nation, he claimed that armed with a robe, a sword and a cross, he casually walked past the GSU officers manning Gate C and proceeded to Moi's office.
The African Roho Msalaba follower said that his plans began in December 2002 when he wrote a letter to Moi and deposited them at the Busia Police Station.
Claiming to have been sent by God to deliver the message, he decided to personally go to the president, saying that he waved the cross to the GSU officers passed and proceeded to kneel down and pray ten metres from the gate.
"In the letter, I told President Moi to hand over power immediately since he had ruined the country with bad policies. I decided to go to see him personally after I failed to get a reply," he said.
He would later be discovered by a cleaner who called in the guards, who came in a group of 30, questioned him and took him to the Kilimani Police Station under tight security.
"They interrogated me asking me who had sent me and what I wanted from State House. I told them I had been sent by God to deliver a message to President Moi," he said.
He was released seven days later without being charged, shortly after which Moi retired.
