Police in Lamu County are pursuing an armed suspect who allegedly attacked and injured three people on Saturday night.
The three were attacked at Peleleza Junction and left nursing serious machete injuries, an incident that was confirmed by County Commissioner Irungu Macharia.
He said they were ambushed at around 7:30pm, and sustained deep cuts in their limbs and heads and are recuperating at Mpeketoni sub county hospital.
He noted that police have since increased patrols in the area to prevent more attacks, adding that the motive behind the attack is yet to be established.
“An unknown character attacked and injured three people in quick succession along Kibaoni-Mpeketoni road. Our officers are searching for the suspects," he said on Sunday.
Morris Muli, a preacher and one of the victims, said he was attacked while ferrying a passenger from Mpeketoni Town to Hongwe on his motorbike.
“I screamed and sped off since I knew he would finish us. The passenger and others helped to rush me to hospital. I suspect the attacker is a robber trying to steal motorcycles from boda boda operators. Cases of the theft of motorcycles have been on the rise," he told Nation.
Another victim has been identified as a teacher.
The victims said that the attacker was spotted by the roadside flagging down motorbike riders and disappeared into bushes after the attacks.
Residents now want the police to curb such cases, saying that the latest ones are just among the many that have been reported in the area.
