US ambassador has testified that President Trump, Vice President Pence and other senior officials were behind a plot to pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, in exchange for aid and a meeting with the US president.

Media reports say that the testimony by the US Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland is the most damaging.

Sondland said that the President of Ukraine was told to his face that he would not be given the chance to visit the White House unless he succumbed to the demands to investigate Joe Biden, one of the Democratic Party front-runners.

“I know that members of this committee frequently frame these complicated issues in the form of a simple question: Was there a ‘quid pro quo’?” Sondland said. “. . . With regard to the requested White House call and the White House meeting, the answer is yes, " he added.

President Trump has been frantically disputing the evidence given against him in the impeachment probe, saying that the probe is a treasonable attempt to remove him from power.

Sondland is a longtime donor to the Republican party and widely regarded as a Trump loyalist.

He said that by asking the Ukrainians to launch the probe against Biden, he was strictly following Donald Trump's orders.
