A section of political leaders in Uasin Gishu county has called for the distribution of copies of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report to the locals to enable them to read and make an informed decision.
Speaking during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Central Primary School grounds in Eldoret town, the leaders led by Governor Jackson Mandago and his deputy Daniel Chemno, however, cautioned against any plans to distribute simplified report rather than the raw one that was launched at Bomas of Kenya.
This comes after the ODM party picked a team that will be mandated to simplify the BBI report for the public.
“I have heard some people saying that they want to simplify the BBI report, who told you that we haven’t read the report? Do you know how many cattle have been sold for people to go to school?" said Mandago.
“We can read and understand the report without anyone simplifying for us. The move is for their political gain and will not benefit the common mwananchi,” added the Uasin Gishu deputy governor Daniel Chemno.
The leaders, however, said Kenya Institute of Education (KIE) should be given the mandate to translate the report into Kiswahili and local languages without diluting the contents for Kenyans at the grassroots to read and understand it before giving their views.
The 156-page document was launched a few weeks ago by President Uhuru Kenyatta and has already witnessed the emergence of different political camps, one seeking its implementation through a referendum and the other pushing for a referendum.
