The United Nations on Tuesday has appointed a new Director-General who will manage the Nairobi offices.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the duties shall be taken by Zainab Bangura, who comes from Sierra Leone.
However, before she formally assumes duties, Gutteres said, Maimunah Sharif shall continue holding brief for her.
"The Secretary-General wishes to extend his appreciation and gratitude to Maimunah Sharif, Executive Director of the UN-Habitat, who will continue to serve as Acting Director-General until Bangura assumes her new position," the UN said in a statement.
Nairobi hosts the United Nations- Habitat and United Nations Environmental Programme offices. It's also the temporary headquarter for UN missions in East and Central Africa.
Bangura began her career in the United Nations with the UN Mission in Liberia, where she was responsible for managing the largest civilian component, including the promotion of capacity-building for Government institutions and community reconciliation.
She was Minister for Health and Sanitation (2010-2012) and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (2007-2010) in the Government of Sierra Leone.
Some of the UN missions that use Nairobi on temporary basis include the UN mission for Somalia, United Nations High Commission for refugees among others.
