The recent reconciliation between Raila Odinga and and Kitutu Chache North MP Jimmy Angwenyi is a great step towards revolution in Gusii politics, argues Prof Bogonko Nyachieo.

For decades, the region has been voting for all presidential candidates apart from in 2002 when majority voted for Simeon Nyachae.

During the funeral of Dr Hezron Manduku a couple of weeks ago, Raila thrilled the crowd when he revisited Angwenyi's violent approach to political enemies.

"Dr Manduku was very humble in parliament. He was not like my brother Jimmy Angwenyi, who would box you when you differed," he noted.

For the first time at the event, Angwenyi showered blessings to Raila Odinga, arguing that the Abagusii people should back BBI referendum.

"Raila has been our friend. He is a cool politician. This country needs a change in governance structure and I fully support these intiatives," he said.

Few days later, the veteran politician visited Mr Odinga at Capitol Hill offices in the company of Governors James Ongwae and John Nyagarama.

And Nyachieo, who once contested against Angwenyi, says the veteran politician will guide the region in fulfilling agendas being driven by Mr Odinga.

"He is a nice catch for Mr Odinga. With his vast experience in politics, he can easily bring Raila's critics to the table. He is an asset to handshake team," he argues.

Jimmy Angwenyi is serving his fifth term in parliament. He was first elected in 1996 after the death of Zachary Onyonka, the father to Richard Onyonka.

He only lost to Richard in 2007 before bouncing back in 2013 when the constituency was split into two. Currently, he's Deputy Minority Leader at the National Assembly.
