According to a statement shared by the body on their Twitter handle, the drill was aimed at assessing the preparedness of the government to handle an accident involving a missing plane.

The drill was also meant to identify any loopholes in the current search and rescue mission standard operating procedure.

"The Aviation and Rescue Exercise dubbed OKOA MAISHA ASAREX 2019, was aimed at assessing the State's level of preparedness in coordination, communication, command, and control of the National Aeronautical Search and Rescue System in responding to an aviation incident. Additionally, the exercise sought to address any gaps within the current Standard Operating Procedures in order to ensure a swift emergency response, optimal use of resources and improve efficiency in response time in any search and rescue mission," part of the statement read.

The mission involved various agencies including; National Police Service, Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), Kenya Meteorological Department, National Disaster Operations Center, Kenya WIldlife (KWS) Ministry of Health, Kenya Airports Authority and Kenya Airways.

The drill, however, led to a scare after reports emerged that there was a plane that had been reported missing after taking off from Rusinga Island.
