The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce has proposed a number of constitutional changes in its draft report, its has emerged.
This comes only days after President Uhuru Kenyatta, who founded the initiative alongside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, vowed to push the BBI report to its realization.
It has emerged that the proposals includes the introduction of the Prime Ministerial position, alongside that of his deputy, to reduce competitiveness of the presidential seat.
Also proposed is the return to the parliamentary governance system and the introduction of a single-term seven year presidency, alongside election of regional Prime Ministers.
According to the report, there is need for the nation to reduce its number of senators to 29 and MPs to 180, to cut down on the current over representation.
Also contained in the draft report is the introduction of 14 regional government, according to the People Daily, with the report now awaiting to be handed over to Uhuru.
Asked to give more information about the report, BBI joint Secretary Paul Mwangi remained tight-lipped, but confirmed that the job is over, only awaiting representation to Kenyans.
“The report is ready but we’re bound by the oath from discussing it. Let’s wait for the President to make it public,” he said.
This comes as a realization of claims from Raila's camp, where allies of the ODM leader have been claiming that major constitutional changes are on their way and must be realized.
At the same time, some forces allied to Deouty President William Ruto have vowed to shoot down any attempt to amend the constitution.
