It has emerged that the Kenyan government is planning to give more prime land to neighbouring nations for the construction of dry ports.
So far, the neighbouring Uganda and Southern Sudan have been beneficiaries of free pieces of land in Naivasha, Nakuru County, where they are expected to establish the ports.
Documents indicate that Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda are also slated for a piece of the land, in a deal that will, however, leave the Tanzania out.
This is because just like Kenya, Tanzania is not landlocked and has a coastline touching the Indian ocean and doesn't therefore need a dry port in a foreign country.
All the remaining countries, on the other hand, depend on the two for their importation sea importation needs.
The government has since allocated Sh700 million for the creation of a water system in the area, with water Principal Secretary Joseph Irungu saying that 12 boreholes have been dunked to supply the ports with water.
“We expect water supply to the entire economic zone by August,” he said when he visited the area three months ago.
Kenya is also building an industrial park in the same aresnto complement the Standard Gauge Railway as it snakes its way through the region on its way to the Kisumu port.
