Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi has disapproved a request from Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria that sought to conduct an audit of the country borrowing trend in the past 20 years.
While turning down the request, Muturi cited that the Committee of Finance and National Planning is fully mandated to perform the task.
Moses Kuria who presented the idea wanted the formation of an ad-hoc committee which could investigate and inquire the National Treasury of the country borrowing trend.
"In this regard, the house of Business Committee (HBC) is of the view that the matters listed in the proposed notice of motion perfectly fall within the mandate of the committee on finance and national planning," Justin Muturi ruled as quoted by Nation.
The MP wanted the selected committee comprising of 15 people to investigate the terms and status of the government, revenue collection, external debt and public expenditure.
While turning down Kuria's request, Muturi also applauded the National Treasury for always submitting satisfactory reports and statistics on its status of loan collected or guaranteed by the national government, national debt, management strategies and other related fields.
There has been concerns over the country's rising debt with the Parliament recently approving a request to raise the debt ceiling to Sh9 trillion.
