Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru has asked the government to declare cancer a national disaster.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, the lawmaker said cases of death resulting from cancer have become rampant in the recent past.
She reminded the leaders that they can no longer bury their heads in the sand when cancer is claiming lives from different quarters.
Waruguru said there are millions of Kenyans suffering in silence, adding that time has come for the government to ensure the disease is controlled.
“As we talk about cancer, we know we are very far from the truth and the reality that the government needs to do something. Your excellency, we do not need to lose our loved ones because all of us you have sworn and promised Kenyans that you will be true to your utmost calling that you protect the lives of the Kenyans. We ask you, think over it. It is time to declare cancer as a national disaster, it is time to zero tax cancer drugs,” she said.
The remarks of the lawmaker come at a time when Kenyans are mourning the death of Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso and Kibra MP Ken Okoth.
The two leaders died after long battles with cancer.
Several leaders are pushing for cancer to be declared a national disaster.
