Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja has made a passionate appeal to President Uhuru Kenyatta over the Tsavo National Park.
Speaking in Changamwe during the flagging off of Kenya's first shipment of oil to China, the county boss called on the Head of State to intervene, and ensure the residents of Taita Taveta benefit from revenue generated from the park.
"And finally Mr President, we would like to benefit from the revenue generated by Tsavo because over 62% of our land has been taken up by the park (Na mwisho rais kwa unyenyekevu ata sisi tukipata percentage kidogo ya Tsavo kwa sababu over 62% yetu yote imeenda na wanyama lakini wanyama wanaleta ushuru na wananchi wa Taita Taveta wanasema wapate kitu kidogo)," the county boss said. Taita Taveta county residents have long called for the government to use part of the revenue generated to develop the county since the park takes a huge chunk of the county's land.
Governor Samboja, who has been battling with his county's Ward Reps, steered clear off the crisis at home.
He had threatened to petition the president to dissolve the Taita Taveta county administration so that fresh elections can be conducted.
