Details have emerged of a plot to save embattled Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, amid ongoing plans to have him impeached through the Nairobi County Assembly.
A number of lawmakers allied to Deputy President William Ruto and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka have joined hands to save the governor, who is facing 19 corruption charges.
The plot includes assuring that the impeachment, if successful, is rejected at the senate. The group members have vowed to rally senators against it.
Reports indicate that some members of the assembly have also been approached to oppose the impeachment motion, on grounds that it will badly affect the county government.
Among those opposed to the ouster plot is Makueni MP Dan Maanzo, who says that the MCAs might end up being the biggest losers.
"Do the MCAs know what they are doing by coming up with an impeachment motion? They could be digging their own grave. The national government can decide to suspend the entire county government and they could easily go home. They had better think twice about the plan,” said the MP.
Maanzo doubles up as a member of Sonko's legal defence team. Assembly Minority Whip Peter Imwatok confirmed the plot to frustrate the impeachment, which he said doesn't bother them as they have enough muscle to wrestle Sonko out of office.
He noted that the move has been informed by the fact that the county is in a crisis, after Sonko, who doesn't have a deputy, was barred from t until his case is heard and determined.
“Anyone who does not want this process to come to a conclusion is basically someone who does not have a heart for the people of Nairobi. Let leaders, including the party leaders, be guided by their conscience and not selfish political interests and revenge,” he said.
He said that the push currently has the baking of 70 of the total 124 MCAs.
