This comes shortly after Tuju declared his interest in keeping the seat, which he has been holding since 2017, in an acting capacity.

However, Barasa, one of the members who have not been comfortable with Tuju's leadership now says that since he has an interest in the looming polls, he cannot be allowed in the poll planning.

To keep him away, he says that plans are in place, under the leadership of a Rift Valley MP, to ensure that the polls are conducted by an independent electoral board and not Tuju.

"If Tuju wants to run for the secretary general’s position, then he will face off with other candidates who will be interested in the position,” he said on Thursday.

Tuju, on his side, sought to address the concerns that the party doesn't seem to be doing anything in preparation for the polls.

He called for calm among members, saying that plans will begin being made on January 6, after which the arrangements will be put in place.

“We want to consult the party leadership on modalities of conducting the polls before communicating the same to party members. We have been on Christmas break and are resuming on January 6. Once we resume, we will hit the ground running and majority of these matters will be addressed. Let members not be jittery,” he said.

Earlier, Barasa had threatened to report the party to the Registrar of Political Parties were it to delay the polls any longer.
