The operators of a renowned matatu SACCO plying Embakasi routes, Embassava Sacco were tasked to help a woman who started experiencing labour pains and contraction at Embakasi bus terminus.
Luckily, to the surprise of many, the woman delivered a bouncing baby girl successfully.
“I just saw a woman writhing in pain before she went down on her knees while her husband who was carrying a bag tried to help her to her feet. Just then she made a loud scream and the baby came out, luckily enough I was right on time to hold the baby’s head as she came out,” narrated an excited Joseph Anari, a matatu crew member.
The crew members who are mostly of male gender had to donate their jackets to prevent the baby from suffering the effects of cold.
A woman from the crowd gave the crew her hairband which was used to tie and cut the baby's umbilical cord.
The matatu operators then stopped a taxi outside the Kenya National Archives which was used to transfer the mother to Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
Speaking to Nairobi News on phone, the father of the baby and the husband to the woman indicated that the mother and the babu are in a stable condition and they will soon be out of the hospital.
“I left Ruiru hoping to have my wife admitted at Pumwani Maternity Hospital but the baby came on our way to the Eastleigh terminus.” He said.
Mr Anari attributes his presence to save the baby's head from hitting the ground to God.
“His parents told me they are considering naming the baby after me,” the tout said with a smile.
Some crew members suggested that the baby be called Drips since he was born next to a matatu dubbed Drips.
