A policewoman together with her husband have been charged in a Mombasa Law Court with trafficking heroin.
Hamdi Yussuf Maalim Ibrahim, a general police officer, was arraigned in court alongside her husband Said Mohamed Abdalla after they were allegedly arrested while in possession of heroin worth Sh805,000.
The two are reported to have been arrested in a rented room in Diani, Kwale with 268.5 grams of heroin.
The couple through their lawyer filed an application before Mombasa Resident Magistrate Ritta Amwai asking to be released on bail pending the next case hearing.
State prosecutor Rosemary Nandi, however, asked the court to deny the two accused persons bail arguing that they are likely to interfere with investigations if released on bail, adding that that the police were investigating an international narcotics syndicate.
Prosecutor Nandi further argued that the two suspects will continue with the illegal business if the court grants their application.
“We oppose the release of the two on bond since the second accused is a police officer and she is likely to interfere with investigations that extend to other countries,” said Nandi as quoted by the Standard.
Magistrate Amwai in her ruling directed that the two accused persons should be released on a Sh500,000 bond each.
The magistrate also directed that they deposit their passports in court.
