President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the introduction a compulsory subject on water and sanitation in all schools.
The President on Tuesday stressed on the need for primary and secondary students to be equipped with skills on proper usage of water.
Uhuru gave the directive during the official opening of the Water and Sanitation Conference held at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) read by his deputy William Ruto.
“In this regard, I am directing the Ministry of Education to introduce a compulsory curriculum on water and sanitation in all schools,” said the Head of State.
He pointed out that if taught earlier in life, the young Kenyans will be able to acknowledge the need to preserve water and will play a major role in prevention of water pollution.
Uhuru pointed out that the nation currently has 62% access to clean water and 25% sewerage coverage, observing that access to water and sanitation services has been rather slow.
The event was also attended by Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui and Adan Mohammed (East African Community).
If implemented, Uhuru will have made a second achievement in the Kenyan school curriculum since his first election in 2013.
This is after he successfully pushed the realization of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), through Education CS George Magoha.
