Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday arrested another suspect linked to the looting of millions from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Nairobi.

The sleuths recovered Sh2 million out of the Sh72 million stolen from the ATM and arrested two suspects at Muumaandu in Machakos County. 

One of the suspects, who was later identified as John Kamau Mulei, led the detectives to the house of his 60-year-old grandmother Mary Kyalo at Kalumoni where the cash had been hidden. The officers managed to recover Sh2,389,000 from the hideout.

“Two suspects connected to the ATM Heist in Nairobi West were early today arrested by #SCPU Detectives & Sh2,389,000/= recovered at Kalumoni in Machakos County. One of the suspects; John KAMAU Mulei is a brother to Bernard Mwendwa, a G4S officer who was arrested on 12/9/19,” DCI tweeted.

“Upon his arrest at Muumandu village in Machakos, Kamau led the detectives to his grandmother (2nd suspect)~60-yr-old Mary Kyalo~ in whose house the Money was recovered. Officers still combing the scene as further investigations continue. Necessary police action being taken,” added DCI.

Mulei’s brother, Bernard Mwendwa had been arrested on Thursday in connection with the theft of the millions. The suspects reportedly posed as police officers before they attacked and robbed G4S personnel of Sh72 million in Nairobi West.  Police confirmed that there was no exchange of fire or anyone injured during the incident.
