A 12-year-old boy was rushed to Lodwar County Referral Hospital after he drowned in swimming during the new year celebrations.
Reports from The Star indicate that the boy was with his family at Stegra Hotel in Lodwar, Turkana County celebrating the new year when the incident happened. It is reported that the boy had initially been swimming in the children's pool. He, however, later on, moved to the adults' pool where he drowned in the deep end.
Further reports indicate that Stegra Hotel tried to prevent the incident from reaching the public by preventing a journalist from taking photos of the scene.
"Immediately I took the photos of people doing first aid to the drowning 12-year-old boy who was about 20 metres away from me. One of the restaurant staffs noticed and raised alarm to her colleagues that a journalist was filming the incident," Hesborn Etyang, a journalist from The Star, narrated.
"I was not given time to express myself, was told I have been sent at the hotel to do a negative publicity so that the hotel can be closed down and was force told to delete the photos. When I tried to resist, one of the bouncers took the camera and threatened to beat me lest if I didn't comply," he added.
The journalist nonetheless reported the incident at Lodwar police station.
