Police in Athi River gunned down two suspected robbers after a gun exchange between the officers and a gang of three suspected criminals.
The shootout occurred at Mlolongo Phase 3, while the robbers were attempting to escape on a motorbike, while the third one managed to escape on foot.
The incident was confirmed by Athi River Sub-County Police Commander Samuel Mukuusi who said that the police spotted the group and gave a chase, resulting in a shootout.
One of the slain suspects, he said, is a notorious criminal who has been harassing area locals, as was confirmed by locals of Athi River Townships and its environs.
He added that none of the suspects had identification documents, linking them to a series of armed robberies that have been recorded in the area.
“None of them had identification documents, but residents have identified one of the slain suspects as a notorious thug who has been part of a series of armed robberies in Athi River Township and its environs,” the police boss told the Standard on phone.
Mr Mukuusi said that the police recovered a firearm and four rounds of ammunition from the suspected thugs.
He said that the police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who escaped, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the City Mortuary in Nairobi.
