Kenya needs more revenue to fund development projects, Treasury acting Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani has said.
Speaking on Tuesday when he held his first official meeting as the head of the Treasury, Yatani appealed to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to embrace more innovative ways to seal all the loopholes affecting the collection of revenue in the country.
He reminded the KRA led by Commissioner General James Mburu, that the shortage of funds makes it hard for the government of the day to offer the best services to its people.
Ukur said the ballooning debt burden is overwhelming the government, adding that sealing these loopholes is among the best solutions to the problem.
"KRA needs to surpass revenue collection targets so that the ballooning debt burden could be reduced," Yatani, as quoted by Standard.
The KRA team assured the CS of their full support following his appointment in acting capacity after the arrest of the Treasury CS Henry Rotich and his Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge over the multimillion Arror-Kimwarer dams project.
Others who were present during the meeting were; new Treasury PS Julius Muia and his Planning counterpart Torome Saitoti.
The meeting comes at a time when the government has raised concern over revenue collection.
KRA has since announced to put in place more measures to ensure there is no revenue loss at the end of the day.
