CoG chairman Wycliffe Oparanya on Wednesday defended the decision, insisting that the governor acted within the law to pick his deputy.

Sonko has been operating without a deputy following the abrupt resignation of Polycarp Igathe in January 2018.

Oparanya now wants MCAs from Nairobi assembly to expedite the vetting of Anne Mwenda, who is currently Chief Officer Disaster Management.

"Nairobi City County Governor HE @MikeSonko is right and free to exercise his constitutional mandate as the head of the County to nominate a Deputy Governor who will assist him to discharge his duties," CoG said.

On Monday, Sonko nominated Mwenda as Deputy Governor, a pick that caught many of his supporters off guard.

"Given the foregoing, and in the interest of ensuring stability Nairobi and the largest County by economy and population, I do hereby nominate Anne Kananu Mwenda to the position of Deputy Governor,” read the letter.

Governor Sonko was barred from accessing his office after being charged in court for corruption-related deals.

Senate passed a bill that allows governors to nominate deputies whenever a vacancy arises. The legislation was not in place before.
