Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has defended President Uhuru Kenyatta for endorsing former footballer McDonald Mariga's candidature for the Kibra seat.
In an interview on Citizen's JKL on Wednesday, Omanga said that she is fully behind Mariga because Uhuru endorsed him. The senator insisted that Uhuru is the party leader and no one should question him over nominations.
"Mariga is the party (Jubilee) candidate. President Kenyatta is our party leader and whatever he says is law. “Akisema niruke nikiwa katikati namuuliza how high sir?" she said.
Uhuru promised to stand with Mariga until he clinches the seat. The president also wished Mariga well as he embarked on campaigns.
“The President wished Mr Mariga, who was accompanied by Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju, success in the contest and assured him of his full backing,” said State House in a statement.
The decision of the President elicited mixed reactions from different quarters. Some of leaders in both caps claimed that the endorsement had become a threat the handshake.
Mariga has since affirmed that he is the best suited for the seat following the demise of Ken Okoth. Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has fronted Imran Okoth. Amani National Congress (ANC) has field Eliud Owalo for the contest.
