This comes amid a heating debate about whether or not the country needs the changes, which has seen politicians take sides for and against the proposed law amendments.

On Tuesday, Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi said that the push for changes is a strong current, which will stop at nothing until they are implemented.

Speaking during a press conference in Siaya county, he stated that any attempt by the national poll body to block the proposed referendum will prove futile.

"IEBC, wherever they are, they should know that they are just a few people, they cannot stand on our way," said the leader, one of the pro-referendum opposition figures.

Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode stated that the county will be sending 300 delegates to the Nyanza BBI forum set for Kisii County on Friday, January 10.

He said that the county will be pushing for a referendum within this year, if possible in July.

"We need to see what is able to make it possible to conduct the referendum by for example July," said Okode.

While allies of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga want a referendum, majority of those allied to Deputy President William Ruto have been opposed to the idea.

Instead, they have stressed the need for the changes, which most have said are unnecessary in the first place, be passed through the cheap and quick parliament avenue.
