Before their March 2018 truce, the two national leaders were the worst of political enemies, which clearly manifested itself in their political  wars before and after the 2017 general polls.

But speaking in Mombasa on Sunday the governor said that their truce and the good working relationship that has followed has brought him to good terms with the president.

He said that its the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader who convinced him to embrace the president, who he was previously involved in a bitter verbal fight with.

The ODM Deputy Leader added that some ODM politicians were initially reluctant to embrace the handshake, bashing others as people who don't want an initiative that will bring political calm.

“There are people within our ranks who reluctant to support the handshake. They are people who want politics throughout the year,” he said, during the Mashujaa Day Celebrations.

The county boss also asked President Kenyatta to intervene in the standoff between the government freighters over the state's decision to make it compulsory to transport cargo through the Standard Gauge Railway.

The decision has led to demonstrations in the county, as the freighters accuse the government of oppressing and forcing them out of business.
