Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has declared his readiness to vie for the gubernatorial seat if called upon to do so.
The senator says that if requested by residents to vie for the seat, currently held by Mike Sonko, he will be ready to honour their demand and declare his interest.
However, he says that the same is irrelevant for now, where he said that he remains serving within his mandate as the senator.
"If people of Nairobi want me to vie for Governor I will go for it but for now I must continue playing my role as a senator unapologetically," Sakaja said on K24 on Sunday night.
The legislator also opposed the proposal to give the county a special status, which will see its leadership handed to the national government.
He stated that the suggestion, which has been made by the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, will take away representation from Nairobi residents, thus denying them the benefits of devolution.
The lawmaker opined that if implemented, 10 per cent of Kenyans living in the county will have incurred a loss instead of benefits.
"I don't agree. Why should you deny 10% of Kenyans, who live in Nairobi, the benefits of devolution?" he noted in a tweet by K24.
Currently, Nairobi is among the 47 counties and is also the richest and most populated devolved unit in the country.
