Mumbi's job description did not involve politics but to mind the family affairs of Kenya's founding Head of State.

Part of her duty was to take Kenyatta's children with First Lady Mama Ngina to school and they were Uhuru Muigai, Anna Nyokabi and the last born Muhoho Kenyatta.

In a past interview with Daily Nation, Mumbi vividly recalled how Uhuru, the current President of Kenya, behaved on his first day in a nursery school along State House Avenue.

The nursery school was run by the defunct City Council of Nairobi.

“I took Uhuru to Lady Northey Nursery School to begin his education. He didn’t cry on his first day away from home. He had accepted me, long before this event, and he trusted me to mean well for him," she recounted.

Mumbi, who is married to former Mwatate MP Major (Rtd) Marsden Madoka, disclosed she has maintained a cordial relationship with Uhuru and his siblings.

“After the first day, part of my job was to take him to school and pick him at the end of the lessons. I took him there when he was about four or five years old. I also took his elder sister, Nyokabi, and his younger brother, Muhoho. We lived in the house next to State House, the same house where Uhuru lives today. I cherish the respect that all three children gave me and I am very proud of their achievements," she said in an interview published in April 2013.

After nursery school, Uhuru moved to Loreto Convent Valley Road but it was later turned into girls’-only school and he had to transfer and join St Mary's School where he also completed his secondary school education.

“The Loreto Sisters loved him. Not because he was the President’s son, but because he was a charming boy. Even today, people who have met Uhuru for some time will tell you he is charming and very down-to-earth," Mumbi remarked.

After St. Mary's school, Uhuru proceeded to Amherst College in the United States, where he graduated with Bachelors degree in economics, political science and government.
