The incident happened in Hope Mills on Thursday, while the pilot was flying out of the Fayetteville Regional Airport shortly before the midnight of Thursday.

The injured was an occupant of the house, while another died on the spot alongside the pilot, in an incident that has been confirmed by the State Highway Patrol.

Officials at the airport said that the pilot, 66-year-old Bill Meritt, had reported issues with his single-engined Beechcraft 55 Baron plane but did not receive any response.

The plane later crashed less than five miles away.

Federal investigators from the National Safety Board and their colleagues from the Federal Administration on Friday arrived at the scene to kick off their probe.

According to a neighbour who witnessed the incident, the plane clipped some trees in the area before crashing.

The neighbour, a former firefighter, said that the survivor was a woman who lived in the house and was lying on top of the wreckage debris and in bad shape when he arrived.

"When I walked in, it was devastating," the man told WRAL News," he told WRAL News.

The injured person was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville hospital after sustaining serious injuries.
