ODM party leader Raila Odinga narrated on Sunday why he didn't attend his mother's burial.
Speaking on NTV, Odinga faulted the Kenya African National Union (KANU) regime for making him miss this crucial event.
His mother's demise came when he was fighting to be freed after being linked to the attempted 1982 coup.
"If they write you a letter, it would take six months to reach you. So a Christmas card was received in June. Like when my mother died, my family sent me a telegram to inform me that my mother had passed on. They kept this telegram for a long time. They never gave it to me but also a friend of mine who was also detained had received the information and had communicated via underground communication," Odinga said on NTV interview.
According to the veteran politician, his brother had asked relevant authorities to allow him to attend the burial. Unfortunately, they only broke the sad news to him three months later.
"When the 'askari' came to break this information to me, I had known. He was looking at my reaction if I would be shocked because otherwise, he would know that somebody has told me. So when he came, I artificially went into tears," Raila narrated.
According to Wikipedia, Raila's mother, Mary Juma Odinga died in 1984.
