Kandara MP Alice Wahome has urged Kenyans not to take recent signs that President Uhuru Kenyatta might remain in leadership past his retirement from the presidency in 2022 lightly.

So far, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, former Jubilee Party Vice Chair David Murathe and Nominated Senator Beth Mugo have said that Uhuru is too young to retire, suggesting that he might bounce back as the Prime Minister.

Wahome, a critic of the president and one of the rebellious leaders from his Mt Kenya backyard now says that the remarks could be having some weight, especially those from Mugo, who is a close relative of the president.

"Kenyans must be thinking Murathe is dreaming. No, I don't think he is dreaming. I don't think Atwoli is speaking from nowhere, I don't think Beth Mugo, who is a close relative of Uhuru Kenyatta, is also speaking from nowhere," she said.

She made the remarks in an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday.

She noted that the argument that Uhuru is still young do not hold any waters as the law has no provision dictating the age at which people holding his current position should retire.

She said that the absence of a presidential term limit is there to ensure that Kenyans can elect whoever they want to lead them, at any age and not to retain.

"When we made our constitution and put provisions of a term limit we did not put the limit of age because we expect that even at 70, of Kenyans want you to be their leader then you will be elected," she added.

Speaking when he hosted Mt Kenya politicians at the Sagana State Lodge late last year, Uhuru said that he would not mind becoming the Prime Minister.

However, he has not addressed the most recent remarks linking him to the seat, which would make him its third holder, after his father Jomo Kenyatta and ODM boss Raila Odinga.
