The State Prosecution on Monday opposed Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's release on bail.
Sonko appeared before the Anti-Corruption Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, where he denied several charges in relation to an Sh357 million graft case.
The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) led by Prosecutors Gitonga Riungu and James Kihara told the magistrate that Sonko should be denied bail since he has another case to answer to.
The prosecution also noted the city boss escaped from jail, at Shimo La Tewa Maximum prison in Mombasa, thus should not be granted bail.
The court was also told that Sonko had previously been sentenced for refusing to present himself to court.
"It's in the interest of the public that the court denies Sonko bail. The reasons I have given are compelling enough to deny him bail," Kihara said as quoted by the Star.
According to the prosecution, Sonko is also capable of messing with the witnesses and the court proceedings.
“If released on bail or bond there is a high likelihood that he will interfere and intimidate witnesses who are junior officers and employees of Nairobi County Government,” a state prosecutor said as quoted by Capital FM.
Sonko's is also said to be a flight risk.
