Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot’s push for constitutional reforms has suffered another major blow after five more counties rejected the Punguza Mizigo Bill.
On Tuesday, the counties assemblies of Kericho, Meru, Kisumu, Trans Nzoia and Tana River rejected proposals in the Bill.
So far, 21 counties have rejected the Bill with only the Uasin Gishu County Assembly voting in support of the initiative.
Kericho MCAs rejected the Bill on grounds that it is not ideal for the Kenyan situation.
The Bill was tabled by Legal Affairs Committee chairperson Edith Chepkoech before the MCAs rejected it.
Chepkoech later took to the media and confirmed that the Bill had no place in Kericho.
"It is clear that the MCAs were not supporting the Bill from the onset despite initially warming up to it. It is all behind us now" she said as quoted by Daily Nation.
On their part, Trans Nzoia MCAs said they could not assent to the proposals because the proposals are not only unrealistic, but also retrogressive.
In Kisumu, Kolwa East Ward Rep Stephen Owiti said that no Kenyan in his right mind will support a Bill which aims at reducing the number of constituencies.
The Bill requires approval by at least 24 county assemblies for it to proceed to the next stage.
